The ELMS is the most prestigious sportscar/GT championship in Europe. It is run and promoted by the ACO (the Automobile Club de l’Ouest) in France, which is the same organisation that runs the World Endurance Championship and the most famous motor race of them all, the Le Mans 24 Hours.
The ELMS features five 4-hour races around some of Europe’s most iconic racing circuits, which are contested by cars in four different classes – two classes each for ‘Prototype’ and ‘GT’ cars. Team Russia by Barwell is competing in the GTC Class in 2014, which is for ‘GT’ cars conforming to FIA GT3 regulations, and its BMW Z4 GT3 will race against teams running similarly tuned machines from Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini, Audi, Mercedes, Aston Martin, McLaren, Corvette, etc.
The winners of this series receive a great deal of kudos in the sportscar/GT racing world, but the big prize for the ELMS Champions in each class is the precious offer of a guaranteed place on the grid for the following year’s Le Mans 24 Hours. Le Mans is always oversubscribed with so many high quality teams and drivers wanting to take part in the biggest race of the year, and thus to be given a guaranteed entry is a highly coveted prize indeed.
